Do you ever get the feeling you’re being watched?
From visiting the corner store, to attending classes, you wouldn’t be blamed for feeling a little paranoid about someone watching you every step of the way.
While there may not be a person actually looking at the monitors, surveillance cameras record our movements in and around an increasing number of public and private locations.
Every week there seems to be a new reality TV program based ‘live’ video of interesting or unusual events, many of them criminal activities, mainly recorded by security cams.
10 to 15 Years for an $80 Robbery
DeAndre Brown was identified by a bakery store clerk as the person who pointed a gun at the clerk’s face before stealing $80.00.
Arrested for armed robbery after being identified by the clerk, Brown spent a month in jail, prosecutors were trying for a 10 to 15 year sentence, and he was forced to wear an electronic ankle bracelet around the clock after he posted bond.
But, when a local TV station picked up the story, their report showed a man confident in his innocence. When reporter Lisa Sylvester asked Brown “is there any way possible that you could have committed this crime?”, Brown responded “there is no way, unless they’re trying to say I’m Superman, where I can be in two places at the same time.”
Brown happens to be a security guard. On the afternoon during which the robbery took place, Brown was required to attend training classes at a location miles away from the robbed store.
Security camera footage showed Brown entering the classes well before the robbery took place, and leaving well after. In addition, Brown signed an attendance list and many of his classmates vouched for his whereabouts.
After the video came to light, it took authorities less than a day to drop the charges. In that day, Brown went from facing 10 to 15 years in prison, and having a criminal record for the rest of his life, to looking out for other people’s security again.
